Brick Calculator FAQs
How much wastage should I allow for?
The calculator automatically adds 10% wastage for cuts, breakages, and mortar variations. For complex patterns like herringbone, add an extra 5% manually.
What is a CMU or cinderblock?
A CMU (Concrete Masonry Unit) or cinderblock is a standard hollow concrete block, typically 8×8×16 inches (200×200×400 mm nominal). They’re used for foundations, retaining walls, and structural walls. The calculator uses approximately 12 blocks per m² for a standard single-wythe wall.
What’s the difference between single and double leaf?
A single leaf (or single wythe) wall is one brick or block thick. A double leaf wall is two layers thick — it doubles the number of units required. Double-leaf brick walls are common in cavity wall construction for better insulation.
